"Maya, is there air conditioning anywhere in Mariupol?" "Oh, come on, this is Ukraine." She smiled happily. "Oh, but there is one place, Disco Bolero and there are many Russian ladies there." I am a typical middle-aged man in that I despise discos. "What time do they open?" We spent the next few hours spread out on her bed wearing as little as possible and moving as little as possible. Yes, I know what you are thinking, but no, oppressive heat does not encourage physical contact. I prayed that the night would be cooler. After sundown we fled the apartment and took a long, slow walk.

The city was actually quite clean and peaceful with many Russian ladies in view, but there was something strange and I couldn't put my finger on it. Maya, as ever, was fetching. At 9:00pm we walked about a mile to Disco Bolero and, Hallelujah!, air conditioning! Most discos in Ukraine usually don't get started until 11PM but tonight Bolero was already packed. No one was on the dance floor so apparently we were not alone in our quest to escape the heat. We took probably the last good table and again I sensed something strange. I let Maya do the talking and she ordered colorful fruit drinks with a lot of ice. I put the glass against my forehead and she laughed. "Oh, it's not hot in here!"
